Better for the Environment

Natural gas is an extremely important source of energy for reducing pollution and maintaining a clean and healthy environment. In addition to being a domestically abundant and secure source of energy, the use of natural gas offers a number of environmental benefits over other sources of energy, particularly other fossil fuels.

  • Clearer Skies - Natural gas combustion emits very small amounts of the substances that make up ground level smog - sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, ash and particulates. This means natural gas helps Indianapolis have clearer skies year round.

  • Less Global Warming - Compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas emits between 15 and 45 percent less carbon dioxide, the primary pollutant being blamed for global warming.

  • More Efficient - While the natural gas supply chain from wellhead to household burner tip is about 90 percent efficient, the electric supply chain from most power plants to household outlet is only about 30 percent efficient.
